Full-Day Kindergarten Update

Learning Resource Teacher for FDK Jennifer Brodhagen gave Trustees an update on the Full Day Kindergarten program at the Board. Jennifer indicated that currently Avon Maitland has 12 elementary schools that offer the full day program and 10 more will add the program in September 2013. By September 2014 every elementary school in Avon Maitland will offer the full day program for JK and SK students. The FDK program features play based and inquiry learning. 2014 Ontario ParaSport Games - Central Huron Bid

OntarioParaSportGamesLogoFlower Board Meeting Highlights   Tuesday, February 12, 2013ParaSport Board Meeting Highlights   Tuesday, February 12, 2013The Clinton and Central Huron BIA and the Municipality of Central Huron has partnered and submitted a bid to host the 2014 Ontario Parasport Games. Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn and Community Improvement Coordinator Genny Smith (photo) detailed for the Board how the games would work if their bid is successful and asked for the Board to support the bid by offering some of its facilities as host a number of the athletic events such as wheelchair basketball. The ParaSport games are in Kingston this year and will have over 450 athletes. If Central Huron is selected for the 2014 games they will be recruiting for over 300 volunteers.

Report of the Finance Committee-Revised Estimates

The Finance Committee met on January 22, 2013 to review and discuss the draft 2012/2013 Revised Estimates budget. Revised Estimates are required to be filed annually. For the 2012/2013 fiscal year, the deadline was December 14, 2012. The Revised Estimates reporting cycle allows boards an opportunity to update their initial Estimates filed by incorporating current (October 31) enrolment data and a number of months of financial activity into their estimates. The Avon Maitland District School Board approved the Operating Revenue and Transfers of Reserves totaling $194,765,007 and Expense Estimates in the amount of $194,765,007 for the period of September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013. The Board also approved the Capital allocations and spending in the amount of $26,411,655 for the period September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013.

Approval of Tender: Renovations to Shakespeare Public School

This project is to renovate space to accommodate the Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten program to be located at this school in September. The project includes renovating existing janitorial space to create 2 new washrooms for the second kindergarten classroom. As well there will be renovations to existing space within the school to create a new storage room, custodial rooms, health room and work room and minor millwork renovations in the existing kindergarten space. The Board approved the tender from SDI Builders for the renovations at Shakespeare Public School in the amount of $131,645.00.

Approval of Tender: Renovations to Sprucedale Public School

This project is to renovate space to accommodate the Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten program to be located at this school in September. The project includes infilling an exterior entrance and renovating an existing classroom to facilitate creation of an appropriate sized kindergarten space. This renovation also includes washroom space, a coat and cubbie area, and a meeting room. As well there are renovations to the existing kindergarten classroom to create washrooms. A new hydraulic chair lift and ramp will be added to this school for accessibility to the primary wing, given the requirement for this coming year. The scope of this project has been expanded to include mechanical and electrical upgrades to the existing classrooms in the primary wing based on need identified in the last facilities review. The Board approved the tender from Niacon for the renovations at Sprucedale Public School in the tender amount of $578,495.00.

Approval of Tender: Renovations to Huron Centennial Public School

This project is to renovate space to accommodate the Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten program to be located at this school in September. The project includes removing an interior wall to combine 2 existing regular classrooms in order to create a new kindergarten space as well as a new resource room and electrical room. The kindergarten space will include a millwork package with cubbies and shelving units as well as new washrooms. This project also includes mechanical upgrades to the staff room which were identified in the facilities review. The Board approved the tender from Elgin Contracting & Restoration Limited for the renovations at Huron Centennial Public School in the tender amount of $320,920.00 subject to Ministry approval.
