2013 Demographic and Enrolment Projections
Jack Ammendolia of Watson and Associates Economists Ltd, presented the latest demographic and enrolment projections for the Avon Maitland District. Below is the slide presentation providing an overview of the latest projections.
March Strategic Plan Reflection Statement

Back in the fall the Board adopted a new four year Strategic Plan to guide the Board, its staff, students and parents through 2016. The new plan came with a new Mission Statement, new goals, principles and values and a new dedicated website, iamalwayslearning.ca.
Over the years organizations prepared strategic plans and shared them through a very detailed publication many of which collected dust on a nearby bookshelf. The dedicated website for the new Avon Maitland Plan is engaging, inspirational and an example of the innovative work that is done in Avon Maitland. The presentation of the new site was provided by Manager of Communications Steve Howe and Communications Web Designer Tim Bilcke.
Approval of Tender: Renovations and Additions to Hullett Central Public School
This project is to add a classroom space and replace asphalt playground space lost to this new addition at Hullett Central Public School to accommodate the Full-Day Early Learning Kindergarten program to be located at this school in September. The project also includes renovations based on need identified in the school during the last facilities review, including the replacement of classroom and corridor lighting, replacement of existing classroom mechanical units and controls, upgrades to the fire alarm system, upgrades to gym ventilation, replacement of windows in all classrooms, office and staff area, replacement of corridor doors and hardware, and painting throughout. In order to have the kindergarten spaces ready for the first day of school in September 2013, construction is expected to begin approximately the middle of April. Our usual safety practices and protocols will be enforced to ensure school staff and students remain safe.
The Board approved the tender from Elgin Contracting for the addition/renovations at Hullett Central Public School in the tender amount of $1,470,130.00.
Approval of Tender: Renovations to Hamlet Public School
While there are extra regular classrooms available at Hamlet PS none is suitable in size for FDK, making the expansion of an existing room necessary. Given the structural challenges of expansion within the school and after studied consideration of three different design options, the finalized scope of the project includes a small 2 storey addition that not only increases the kindergarten classroom on the first floor to an appropriate sized FDK space but has the collateral effect of creating a resource room on the second floor. In order to have the kindergarten space ready for the first day of school in September 2013, construction is expected to begin approximately mid-April. Safety practices and protocols will be enforced to ensure school staff and students remain safe.
The Board approved the tender from Feltz Design Build for addition/renovations at Hamlet Public School in the tender amount of $1,135,650.00 subject to Ministry approval.
Approval of Tender: Renovations to Mitchell District High School
This project will renovate space at Mitchell District High School to accommodate grade 7 & 8’s from Upper Thames Elementary School for September 2013 thereby vacating enough space at Upper Thames to allow the Board to undertake renovations at Upper Thames during the 2013/2014 school year to prepare for FDK starting September of 2014, the last year of implementation. This project includes the renovation of a redundant science room and adjacent storage room to a regular classroom and meeting space, combining 3 small general office/storage/meeting rooms back into a standard classroom, renovation of a teacher preparation space into two (2) offices for Secondary and Elementary Vice Principals and renovations to the existing Audio Visual room to create a multi-purpose space for use as a regular classroom or Daily Physical Activity area depending on the need. n order to have the space ready for the first day of school in September 2013,construction is expected to begin in June.
The Board approved the tender from SDI Builders for renovations at Mitchell District High School in the tender amount of $603,646.00.
Approval of Tender: Renovations and Additions to Listowel District Secondary School - Phase 2
In April 2009, Administration received a letter from the Ministry regarding confirmation of an allocation for Build Capacity at Listowel District Secondary School (LDSS). This allocation is based on enrolment pressures and flowed under the normal grant structure. The total amount of the Enrolment Pressure funding for LDSS is $4,117,335. The facilities team, in consultation with LDSS staff, has developed an overall capital plan for the school to be phased in over a multi-year period, as funding permits.
Once this phase has been completed, a net three new classroom spaces will have been created. Specialized classrooms will be altered to make them more current and enhance the curriculum delivery, while at the same time making some specialized rooms available for regular classroom use. Accessibility issues at the front entrance will be addressed as well as building code and fire safety issues in and around the cafeteria, common area and the hallway near the main gym. The main office and guidance office will be reorganized to provide full visibility to students and the public entering the building. Phase 1 of the project which included alterations to the art room, music room and fashion design area was completed in the fall of 2012.
**Note:This new motion was approved at a special board meeting held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 after the original contractor awarded the tender withdrew from the process.
The Board approved the tender from K & L Construction for addition/renovations at Listowel District Secondary School in the amount of $2,117,507.00.
2012 Report for The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act
The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 was enacted to assure the public disclosure of the salary and benefits paid in respect of employment in the public sector to employees who are paid a salary of $100,000 or more in a year. School Boards are required to comply with this legislation. Each employer must make available for inspection by the public (or make available upon request) without charge, a written record of the salary and benefits paid to such employees.
