June Strategic Plan Reflection Statement

Vice-Chair Lynette Geddes spoke about how we value our communities when we are creating positive and inclusive learning environments, and improving student outcomes.

Fred L. Bartlett Memorial Award

CassellAwardOn behalf of the Ontario Public School Boards's Association the Avon Maitland Board presented the Fred L. Barlett Memorial Award to Stephen Central Public School teacher Leigh Cassell. The Fred L. Bartlett Memorial Award is for Outstanding Contribution to Education in Ontario. Leigh is receiving the honour for her creation of the Digital Human Library.

The Fred L. Bartlett Memorial Award has been awarded annually since 1970 to an active or retired member of the teaching profession celebrating his or her outstanding contribution to education throughout Ontario.

Implementation of the Empower Reading Program - Secondary Students

Secondary Empower ClassSpecial Education Consultant Amy Kipfer and Stratford Northwestern Teacher Nikki Welsh provided an update on the implementation of the Empower Reading Program, first reviewing the elementary program and then focusing on at the secondary initiative.

A secondary student is eligible to participate in the Empower Program if they are in grade 9 or 10, have significant difficulty acquiring age appropriate reading skills, are English language learners, or have low average to above average cognitive skills.

An Empower Reading class typically has 4-8 students with classes every school day for a full period of 76 minutes. There are 70 lessons which focus on decoding and comprehension. In the current school year 38 high school students were engaged in the Empower program, and of those 29 improved their reading skills by 3 or more levels.

Transportation Request for Proposal (RFP) #13-01 – Results

The Huron Perth Student Transportation Services Steering Committee received a comprehensive report detailing the process undertaken to competitively procure transportation services for thirty-six (36) Special Needs routes across both systems. The estimated total cost of the routes to be awarded to each of the five (5) proponents effective September 1, 2013 for the upcoming school year, as follows, represents a 0.04% decrease from the total of these current route costs.

  • First Student 15 routes at $573,911.84
  • J&T Murphy 12 routes at $444,085.43
  • Newry 4 routes at $104,016.55
  • STC 4 routes at $187,375.97
  • Montgomery 1 route at $47,397.42

Approval of Tender: Roofing at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School

SNWSSAs part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements to be funded through Ministry facility grants, a tender was let for re-roofing the north end of the music and drama rooms at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School. The Board approved the tender from Smith Peat Roofing for roofing at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School in the amount of $151,549.95. This project will be funded through School Renewal funding.
