Board Approves Balanced Budget for 2013-2014

At the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Avon Maitland District School Board approved the Operating Revenue and Transfers of Reserves totaling $192,132,834 and Expense Estimates in the amount of $192,132,834 for the period of September 1, 2013 to August 31, 2014. The Board also approved capital expenditures of $15,972,388.

Morris-Turnberry Purchases Turnberry Central

The Municipality of Morris-Turnberry and the Avon Maitland District School Board announced an agreement for the purchase of Turnberry Central Public School and its 7.7 acre property by the municipality.

The purchase agreement was announced at a news conference Tuesday at the Education Centre in Seaforth. The property was purchased from the Board for $210,000. Select this link for the full story.

Students Senators Thanked by Trustees

Prior to the regular Board Meeting, Chair Colleen Schenk presented the Senators and Trustees with the Annual Plaque where the Senators names are engraved.

Approval of Tender: Masonry at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School

As part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements to be funded through Ministry facility grants, a tender was let for masonry repairs at Stratford Northwestern Secondary School on the north west corner on the south side of the SNSS connecting link to SERC as well as a portion of the south side of the SERC building. The Board accepted the tender from Smith Construction for masonry repairs at Stratford Northwestern in the amount of $76,162.00 recognizing the intent to expand the masonry work to the budgeted amount of $100,000.00.

Approval of Tender: Roofing at Central Huron Secondary School

As part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements to be funded through Ministry facility grants, a tender was let for re-roofing the second storey section from administration to the LRC as well as the cafeteria at Central Huron Secondary School. The Board accepted the tender from Keller Roofing for roofing at Central Huron Secondary School in the amount of $431,547.00.

Boundary Adjustment – Northwest Corner of the City of Stratford

Staff has been monitoring housing developments in Stratford over the last few years, and particularly in the northwest corner. Developments have progressed significantly and families may begin living in this area as soon as this fall. As such, it is now timely for Administration to consider boundary adjustments that will best serve students from this northwest area and the existing community. The area in question is currently part of Central Perth PS boundary but was annexed by the City of Stratford in 2007. Two developments are planned for this area.

While some schools will reach near capacity levels with full day kindergarten implementation; it is projected that Avon PS and Northwestern Elementary will continue to have the necessary space to accommodate JK-8 students from the new development area. Consultation on boundary adjustments typically involves affected families. However, it is preferred that boundary adjustments be made when there are no existing students living in an subject area, which is the case in this small subdivision that is part of the City of Stratford. Staff will implement this boundary adjustment for the start of the 2013/2014 school year.
