Get Your Flu Shot Early: Health Unit

FlushotFlu season is here again. In Huron County, you can get your free flu shot at a community clinic, your doctor’s office, or at the Health Unit. As well, people over 5 years of age can get the shot at one of 10 participating pharmacies. “A flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and others against a serious infection,” says Public Health Nurse Susan Hart. “Remember to get your shot early. Your body takes two weeks to build full protection.”

The Health Unit makes it easier for you to get your flu shot by offering two new services: An express line for parents with children at its drop-in community clinics and a drive-thru clinic for people with restricted mobility. The drive-thru clinic is October 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Health Unit office in Clinton. Make an appointment by phoning 519.482.3416 or 1.877.837.6143.

The Perth District Health Unit wants everyone to choose to stay healthy this winter by getting the free flu shot. Flu shots will be available at community clinics across Perth County starting in Stratford on October 28. The flu shot is also available through family doctors, family health teams, at select pharmacies, and through some workplaces.

As always, the flu shot is the number one way all individuals over 6 months of age can protect themselves and their families from getting sick with the flu. “The flu is a serious respiratory virus and much worse than a cold,” says Larry Morrell, Public Health Nurse. “The flu shot works by boosting your immune system to make it better at fighting the flu – and keeping you healthy.”

Typical symptoms of influenza include a cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, chills, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, sneezing, watery eyes, and loss of appetite. Influenza rarely causes diarrhea or throwing up. It is not the same as what’s often referred to as “stomach flu.”
