Board Approves Balanced Budget for 2014-2015

The Finance Committee met on May 27th, June 17th and June 24th to review and discuss the draft 2014/2015 Estimates budget. The Special Education Advisory Committee met on June 4th and June 18th to review the Special Education portion of the budget. On Monday, June 9, 2014 Board administration was able to achieve a draft balanced operating budget, subject to review by the Finance Committee. The 2014/2015 budget reflects investments in student outcomes, literacy and numeracy, inclusive education, pathways, safety as well as instructional leadership. Each of these items has been established as a key
element in the Board’s Improvement Plan for Student Achievement.

The Board approved the Operating Revenue and Transfers of Reserves totaling $197,947,830 and Expense Estimates in the amount of $197,947,830 for the period of September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015. The Board also approved the Capital allocations and spending in the amount of $12,929,254 for the period September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015.

Student Senators Introduce Constitution and How to Manual

Senators 300x199 Board Meeting Highlights   June 24, 2014In their last meeting of the school year, the Board's Student Advisory Committee, known as the Student Senate presented a new constitution to the Board, along with a How to be a Senator Manual for future members of the Senate. The Senators which includes the two student trustees outlined the purpose of having a constitution and to help raise the profile of the position in the Avon Maitland Schools. This year's Senate developed the "How to Manual" so that when the new Senators take their positions in September, they are up and running faster and the orientation time on the job is reduced, making the Student Senate more effective.

Renovations to Huron Centennial Public School

This project in the west wing represents another phase of lighting, window and unit ventilator replacement in our multi-phase approach to upgrading the school which began in the north wing a few years ago. The Board approved the tender from Wayne & Harold Smith Construction Ltd. Elgin Contracting for renovations at Huron Centennial Public School in the tender amount of $441,996.00.

Masonry at Hamlet Public School and Stratford Northwestern Secondary School

As part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements, this tender involves two smaller masonry projects, at Hamlet Public School and the SERC portion of Stratford Northwestern Secondary School, tendered together to recognize cost efficiencies. The Board approved the tender from Wayne & Harold Smith Construction for masonry repairs at Hamlet Public School and Stratford Northwestern Secondary School (SERC) in the contract amount of $99,779.00.

Masonry and Windows at St. Marys DCVI

As part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements to be funded through Ministry facility grants, a tender was let for masonry repair on the west and north wall and window replacement on the north elevation, west end of St. Marys DCVI. The Board approved the tender from Feltz Design Build for
masonry repairs and window replacement at St. Marys DCVI in the tender amount of $213,832.16.

Mechanical Upgrades to St. Marys DCVI

As part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements, two distinct mechanical projects at St. Marys DCVI were combined in an effort to gain cost efficiencies. the competitive procurement from Culliton Incorporated for mechanical upgrades at St. Marys DCVI in the bid amount of $143,171.00.
