Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in Grades 7 to 9:
Next Generation Learning was launched in 2014, when AMDSB decided to place portable technology, specifically iPads, into the hands of the teachers and students in our Intermediate classrooms. This project strives to leverage the use of this technology to improve student achievement and well-being.
The Ministry of Education has identified technology as a means to support students to reach their full potential. In their 2014 renewed vision document, entitled “Achieving Excellence” they state that “students…. will benefit from a wide array of opportunities both inside and outside of school that are compelling and contribute to their success, including the opportunity to benefit from the effective and appropriate use of technology in the classroom. In a world that is constantly changing, Ontario students will be better prepared to adapt, achieve and excel, regardless of the challenges they face”.
In 2015, we surveyed over 100 teachers and 700 Intermediate students across the District, and these results have provided insight into how these devices are transforming teaching and learning in our classrooms. Specifically, we found that over 96% of teachers reported that they used their iPads in several subjects each day, and most reported that they have changed how they assess student learning. Students described three main ways that their learning is different with the iPads. They described that they now have increased access to information, research and learning materials, that they feel better organized, and that they enjoy the new ways that they can collaborate with one another.
The feedback from the teachers and students last year was invaluable as we broadened the work into our secondary schools. Now we are asking for parental feedback on perceptions and concerns, so as to best support the next phase of our work. To that end we would ask that you take a few minutes to complete the survey. If you would like a hard copy of the survey, please contact your school Principal.
We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support of our work, and look forward to hearing your feedback so that we can continue to support your children as they continue to develop the necessary skills and attributes for the future.
