Earlier this spring grade 6-7-8 students from three schools, Maitland River Elementary, Wallace Public and Howick Public School got together for a “Mini We Day”. The day was modeled after the big event held in Toronto each year by Free the Children. The plan for the day was to redefine cool, because research indicates that some students are bullies because they think it is cool. The day featured 3 bands, 4 professional speakers, a country music celebrity and representatives from Free The Children Toronto.
The catch phrase for our day is “Redefining Cool: It’s All About Character”. (V
Organizer and Howick Teacher Trevor Hammer said “Taking into account our board’s character virtues (Fairness, Honesty, Empathy, Respect, Courage, Integrity, Optimism, and Compassion) the speakers and performers focused their words on these virtues. Our goal is to eliminate bullying through acceptance and tolerance, and we’ve agreed (as a class) that if we can re-define what “Cool” means, that we can increase self-esteem and thereby reduce bullying behaviour.”
