This week we have been talking about equity in education
Equity: a condition or state of fair, inclusive and respectful treatment of all people. Equity does not mean treating people the same without regard for individual differences.
Equity is something that we want for our society and culture, but it is something that we have to work hard to achieve. To do so, we know that it is a virtue we must instill in our children as they learn about their world.
We are proud to feature some of the ways in which the Avon Maitland District is pursuing equity in education:
The Avon Maitland District School Board remains committed to Ontario’s Equity Action Plan and fostering an inclusive environment for all of our students and staff.
Schools across our district also recognized and participated in Children’s Mental Health Week
Each year, students and staff across Huron and Perth county participate in Wellness Days where they engage in activities to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. On Thursday, students at North Perth Westfield hand crafted colourful quilts WITH messages promoting love and positive thinking. Seaforth Public School wore green as part of a province-wide campaign.
“Its an opportunity to celebrate all of the things being done in our schools that promote mental health well-being for both staff and students” -Dr Anne Robinson, Mental Health Lead.
As we reflect on this past week we are very proud of everything our schools have accomplished for both Equity and Children’s Mental Health.
