Let’s All Strive for Positive Mental Health
The week of May 7th – 13th is recognized as Children’s Mental Health week. Schools across Avon Maitland will be participating in their own “Wellness Days”, where students and staff engage in activities to promote positive mental health and well being. These activities range from dance, music, yoga, culinary, and more. The goal is for students to take a step back from their studies and engage in activities that will better their mental and physical health, all while learning something new!
“Its an opportunity to celebrate all of the things being done in our schools that promote mental health well-being for both staff and students” -Dr Anne Robinson, Mental Health Lead.
We all have Mental Health, just as we all have physical health and dental health. Mental health is one component of overall health.
The World Health Organization defines mental health as: A state of well being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
What’s happening this week?
Schools will be participating and raising awareness in a variety of ways and we will highlight these on our Facebook and Twitter pages for you to enjoy. To celebrate Mental Health Week, a wave of green will sweep over Ontario. Over 100 buildings will shine green, for example, the CN tower, the Peace Bridge, the Healing Garden Monument at CPRI in London. People across the province are encouraged to wear something green – be it an article of clothing or an accessory.
The Avon Maitland District School continues to support our students and provide opportunities for everyone to celebrate health and wellness.
