February is Inclusive Education Month in Canada
Inclusive education happens when all children, regardless of any learning or social disabilities, participate and learn together in the same classroom. At Avon Maitland we believe that every child and family is valued equally and that everyone deserves the same opportunities and experiences in a classroom environment.
What are the benefits of Inclusion?
- Inclusion is a moral choice
- Improves students’ interdependence and confidence
- Broadens perspectives of educators and peers
- Opens up the conversation
- Creates a shift from charity-based inclusion to rights-based inclusion
In 2013 countries in Europe and Central Asia agreed to work together to include all children in quality learning
The Avon Maitland District School Board has since been seen as champions of inclusive education by other educational institutes around the world. On October 30 and 31st of 2017, Avon Maitland schools hosted a delegation of 34 educators from the Netherlands interested in learning about our approach to inclusive education.
We also hosted a tour of our schools to educational representatives from the United Arab Emirates who are on a mission to bring greater levels of inclusive education to their school districts.
It is an honour to be recognized on a global scale as leaders of inclusive education and we are extremely proud of our staff members and their continuing efforts in making that a reality. However, it is the students at Avon Maitland who are the true champions of inclusive education. Over the years students from our elementary and secondary schools have taken initiative and created a variety of work (both curricular and extracurricular) with a strong emphasis on making our schools a more inclusive environment.
Our annual Choosin’ Inclusion symposiums celebrate diversity and inclusivity. Students and staff from across Avon Maitland gather together for a productive day of team learning, building activities, and thoughtful discussions on how to better our schools. This year’s symposium will be held on February 21st, 2018, at the Stratford Rotary Complex.
A social media campaign will be held throughout the month of February to highlight some of the ways we support inclusive education. Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to stay up to date on our future posts. We also encourage you to share your own examples on social media with the hashtag #amdsblearns. Let’s work together to be the change we want to see in our schools!
