We are happy to announce that Emma Badley (MDHS) has been voted in as the incoming Student Trustee for 2019-2021!
Here she is introducing herself in her own words:
Hi everyone. I am Emma Badley, a Grade 11 student at Mitchell District High School. I am super excited to be a part of Student Senate next school year!! A bit about me: I am involved within my school as a part of the field hockey, curling, and soccer teams, the Blue Buds peer mentorship program, the book club, a tutor for other students, and a member of Student Council, where during grades 7-9 I represented my grade, last year (Grade 10) I was social convenor and advertiser, and this year (Grade 11) I am president. As well, I am involved in my community as a step dancing teacher for young children, a 4H member, working at a store in downtown Mitchell called Jillian’s, and volunteering at local events (such as community breakfasts, sports tournaments, church fundraisers, and a summer camp).
Through these various activities, I have developed strong leadership, communication, and creativity skills that have proven very useful throughout my year as President, allowing me to be confident when speaking in front of others, as well as improving skills for planning, organizing, and carrying out events in the school and community (Grade 9 Day, Halloween 4 Hunger Food Drive, MDHS Winter Clothing Drive, various spirit days, and our upcoming school-wide Walkathon event). Student Council has provided me many opportunities, and I look forward to building on these skills next year on Student Senate, and…as a Student Trustee.
[As] a Student Trustee representing our school board, my main emphasis [will] be on collecting student voice: what are our schools doing well, and what can they improve on? One way I would try to achieve this goal would be through starting an Instagram account where the Student Trustees post about new and current initiatives. This account would also allow AMDSB students and parents to send the trustees Direct Messages with any feedback or suggestions they may have. This platform also allows simple collection of data through polls and short answer responses to questions where student voice can easily be inputted. My goal to collect student voice could be facilitated this way, as many students seem to have Instagram accounts. With that being said, there are still students who do not have access to social media. To combat this issue, I think it would be beneficial for the Student Trustees to visit each school, where they could meet the students, talk about the role of the Student Senate, and collect student voice personally.
We are very excited to have Emma as one of the 2019-2021 Student Trustees and look forward to her future accomplishments.
