As another school year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy summer. I hope the months ahead will allow you the opportunity to reflect, re-energize, and to enjoy your family and friends.
As we approach the new school year we are working towards the completion of particular goals set out in our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan before it comes up for renewal. Work has already begun to develop our 2020-2024 Strategic Plan, and as part of our consultation process we used an online tool called thoughtexchange to ask parents, students and community members: “What do you value most about Avon Maitland DSB and what can we do better to prepare students for life and learning?”. The answers to this question will help give us some perspective about what our community deems important to consider as we move towards our 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.
In March of this year, the Ontario government released its new vision for education, Education that Works for You, along with a number of changes to our budget allocations, priority funding and grants. For Avon Maitland DSB this meant a total program funding reduction of approximately $7Million dollars.
It has been a big transition in our system to adapt to these changes. As you know, some teaching and support staff have been declared redundant for the next year. While funding is significantly reduced from previous years, we endeavour to continue to make decisions that deliver, as much as possible, a system of support and programming that is responsive to our students and their needs.
Our commitment continues to be to ensure the best possible education to students in Avon Maitland District School Board. We do this by creating positive, inclusive learning environments, and by engaging our students to maximize their outcomes and support their well being.
Wishing you, our families, a wonderful summer! See you in September!
Dr. Lisa Walsh Director of Education and Secretary of the Board
