1 in 5 children and youth face various mental health concerns. As a school board it is our responsibility to promote positive mental health, increase awareness of signs of child and youth mental health problems and available treatment options, and decrease the stigma associated with mental health.
Either directly or indirectly, mental illness is something that affects us all at some point in our lives. While the stigma surrounding it still remains, Avon Maitland hopes that by engaging in thoughtful discussion we can continue to break down barriers and continue to create positive inclusive learning environments.
A video has been created by Stratford Northwestern SS students Jennifer Murray and Josh Britton, with assistance from teacher Ms. Colquhoun and Avon Maitland’s Communications Department. The project was proposed and was successful in receiving a SpeakUp grant.
The video is intended to reduce the stigma around Mental health issues in the school by demonstrating how students experience mental health. It is an intimate look at the personal stories of three Northwestern Students and how they have dealt with their struggles of depression and anxiety.
