Secondary Students took part in collaborative and creative exercises in Milverton as part of an initiative called Youth Leadership Day.
This 1-day experience empowers students as change-makers in their community. In a series of hands-on activities, students work together to explore challenges that exist in their community and will learn a variety of techniques for generating, refining, and communicating creative solutions.
During the first half of the day students were presented with a series of common challenges that exist in Rural Ontario. From there the students were encouraged to split into teams by finding others with common passions but different skill sets. The teams collaborated to find solutions to these challenges, all while providing constructive feedback and encouraging others to share and refine their own ideas. At the end of the day groups had exactly 1 minute to pitch their idea to a panel of judges; an exercise that mimics selling your idea to potential investors.
One group focused on the challenge surrounding budgeting, debt, and financial literacy for students – something very common for high school students across the country.
This day was made possible by The County of Perth and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program.
