Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, home of Hi Records and the Hi Rhythm Section, grew from a minor rockabilly studio into one of the most successful producers of soul music worldwide. The studio boasts an impressive artist list including names like Al Green, Otis Clay, Snoop Dog, Boz Scaggs, John Mayer, Buddy Guy, Bobby Bland, Drake and more.
Recent addition to the list:
Jazz Combo 2016 – South Huron District High School, Exeter, ON Canada
The Combo eagerly broke away for the session while on tour with the school’s Concert Band this month.
Combo member Paige Elliott (vocals) created the basic structure of the song, lyrics and melody. It was her first time doing so. The remaining members then arranged and contributed their parts.
“The goal of the Combo was to pen something ‘classic’ but ours,” states Music Teacher and Band Director Isaac Moore.
The Jazz Combo worked with Robert Breen from the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART) to produce a demo of the song before they went to Memphis.
Once at Royal Studios in Memphis the students had the experience of working with producer Boo Mitchell. Mitchell had just recently won a Grammy for his work on “Uptown Funk” – a track cut in the same studio the Combo used and with the same mixing board and equipment.
A 5-hour session was booked in hopes of finishing one tune.
“And we did it!,” exclaims Moore.
