At Avon Maitland District School Board we are committed to creating positive inclusive learning environments, and maximizing outcomes for our students. In order to continue with this work, we need to better understand the needs of our students and their families. To help us with this, we launched our first board-wide student identification survey last school year.
What was this survey all about?
Project Purpose: To bring clarity to our diverse student population and enhance understanding of Avon Maitland students. This project will then support equity and student achievement through evidence-informed decision making in three action areas:
- Better understand and respond to diverse student populations and communities
- Identify and respond to barriers to student success
- Enhance the creation and distribution of programs and services
Project Scope: Board-wide student data collection based on identity categories provided by the Ministry of Education and informed by an AMDSB selected steering committee comprised of educators and board administrators. Community agencies were also consulted. Data was collected on a voluntary basis and included subjects like race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity (kindergarten to grade 6 students did not answer questions related to sexual orientation).
How was data collected?
Grades K-6: The board-wide survey was originally conducted in December 2018 and was intended to help us learn about the diversity of our students. Our response rate in elementary schools (K-6) was low — we believe we did not provide enough accessibility to parents/guardians to complete the survey — so we redistributed it in April 2019 to gather a fulsome data set to be able to respond to the diversity of our student population. Parents/guardians were able fill out the survey online.
Grades 7-12: This group of students completed the survey at school during the month of December. The survey was not redistributed for this group, as the original response rate provided a fulsome set of data.
What happened with my information?
The survey was confidential but not anonymous. Student login and birth dates provided on the survey have allowed the data to be compared with other types of data (e.g. demographic data, school programs and achievement data) at the system and school level. All data was collected and is housed by the Avon Maitland District School Board and accessed only under the direction of the Director of Education.
Personal information is collected under the authority of the Education Act, RSO 1990, c. E-2, and in compliance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, RSO 1990, c. M-56. The personal information collected will be used for educational, health and welfare purposes affecting students. Questions about this collection or use should be directed to the Principal of your School or Superintendent of Education, Avon Maitland District School Board, 62 Chalk Street North, Seaforth, N0K 1W0, telephone (519) 527-0111 or (800) 592-5437.
