4 Avon Maitland DSB Students Head to Canada Wide Science Fair
Superintendent Morris reported that on April 3rd, Student Scientists (Grades 7 to 9) from across the Avon Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic District School Boards stood project to project for the annual Huron Perth Science Fair on April 3, 2019. Avon Maitland represented very well at this year’s science fair, sending students from GDCI, SHDHS, and two students from SCSS to the Canada wide fair (4 of the 5 joint spots). Judges remarked that the quality and scientific thought were higher than ever, and they were impressed with the confidence and articulateness of the students. Winners are preparing our delegation for the May 11-17 trip to Fredericton, NB.
Hullet Central PS Student Reads Award Winning Essay at the UN.
In February of 2019 Mikayla’s essay, entitled “Kindness Matters”, was named the best in the world by Lions Clubs International. Mikayla is a 6th grade student at Hullett Central Public School who lives in Blyth, ON. In addition to a trophy and a trip to New York City to recite her essay at the United Nations, she also took home a cash prize of $5,000 U.S. for her efforts.
Stream of Dreams
Trustee Geddes gave special mention to the work being done by the students at Downie Public School and the Stream of Dreams initiative. Every student in the school painted their own recyclable fish that will be displayed on the fence in the front of the school. The backs of all the fish will be painted blue to represent a flowing stream. The school worked with the conservation authorities who gave presentations to the students about water conservation and the dangers of over pollution.
Safe Places Huron County Goderich
Trustee Carmichael attended the launch of this new program spearheaded by Rural Responses for Healthy Children. The intention is to increase public awareness and understanding about how to listen to children and youth. The project certify’s adults in the community to work with youth. Minister Thompson along with 40 GDCI students were in attendance.
LDSS Alumni wins Texas Open (PGA)
An amazing success story brought forth by Trustee Rothwell of former LDSS student Corey Conners who won the Texas Open. The 27 year old professional golfer from Listowel will soon be heading for the Masters .
Tenders for re-roofing at the following schools have been awarded:
Bluewater Coast Elementary School, Central Huron Secondary School, Goderich District Collegiate Institute, South Huron District High School, Brookside Public School, Hullett Central Public School and F.E. Madill Secondary School.
Trustee Hunking gave a report about the OPSBA Advocacy Day held yesterday, April 8 at the Ontario Legislature. Leaders met with ministers, staff, and leaders of the NDP, Green Party, and Liberal Party.
Senior Staff Updates
Associate Superintendent Carter summarizes a Ministry of Education memo (SBO2 dated April 3rd) that was a follow up to the previous memo regarding changes to education. The memo lays out details to attrition funding protection. The memo raised questions that the Ministry has promised to answer shortly.
Carter also brought up an announcement from the Ontario government regarding a centralized procurement initiative. The announcement is described as interim measures regarding purchases over $25,000 effective retroactively to March 18 (except for Facilities Capital Construction).
Student Trustee Update
Student Trustee Natalie Moore mentioned the trustees were in the stages of discussing their ideas on how to maximize student learning and creating a more positive learning environment. There will be a student symposium in the future with the date to be announced.
