Transition Fair for Students with Special Needs May 29
Trustee Geddes announced the second annual Transition Fair. The event is for youth with disabilities 14 -21 years of age and their families, and will be held from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. on May 29 in the Seaforth Public School gymnasium. The event will provide students and their parents with information about supports and services available to assist with the transition out of secondary school. Over 20 service agencies will be there to inform attendees about community supports and opportunities.
AMDSB Students Excel at Kiwanis Festival
Trustee Moore acknowledged the accomplishments of Avon Maitland students and their teachers at the Stratford Kiwanis Festival of the Performing Arts, which is in its final week of competition. Students competed individually and as choirs and bands, and did very well. Results have not been posted to the website yet, but Little Falls PS won the Deb Mountain Trophy for Primary Choir and Hamlet PS won the Doug Mountain Trophy for Primary Grade Choir. Congratulations everyone!
The Stars of the Festival performance will be held May 6th at Avondale United Church.
Success by Listowel DSS and Stratford Central SS at Drama Festival
Trustee Rothwell congratulated secondary drama students who participated in this year’s National Theatre School of Canada Western Regional Drama Festival in Barrie earlier this month.
Listowel District Secondary School’s Black Door Theatre group “gave a stunning production of ‘The Infamous Soothing System of Professor Maillard’… They came away with an Award of Merit for Set Design and a prestigious Adjudicator’s Award for Performance to Cam McCluskie for his role as ‘Frog’.” (Source: Trustee Rothwell).
Stratford Central Secondary School won an Award of Merit in the category of Production Design for their production of ‘Buttonholes in Silk’.
2019-2020 School Year Calendar Approved
On behalf of the School Year Calendar Committee, Superintendent Morris presented a report containing the proposed 2019-2020 school year calendar for the Board’s approval. The elementary and secondary calendars were developed by a committee representing trustees, administration, employee groups and students, as well as the AMDSB Principals’ Association.
The proposed calendar was posted on the Board website for two weeks of consultation before the report was prepared to take it to the trustees. The calendar as presented was approved and will soon be posted on the Board website.
The Avon Maitland DSB trustees sent a letter to Minister of Education Lisa Thompson on April 15, 2019. Read the letter.
Chair Activity Update
Chair Schenk highlighted a number of meetings and events that she attended since the last meeting, including a fascinating North American Hoop Dancing event at Maitland River Elementary School. The event included a demonstration by the North American Hoop Dancing Champion as well as workshops for students, and was sponsored by the Foundation for Education.
Senior Staff Updates
DELF May 6-8
Superintendent Morris gave an update regarding the Diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF), to be held on May 6, 7 and 8 in the library at Stratford Northwestern SS. More than 110 students have applied to take the test, representing every secondary school in our district.
Stratford Project – Transition Activity Update
Director Walsh mentioned that a second Transition Activity Update Newsletter will be distributed to the families of Stratford area schools tomorrow. The newsletter contains more information about the Transition Year (2019-2020), in which all Stratford Central and Stratford Northwestern students will be housed at Northwestern. More information about the project can be found on the Stratford section of the Board website.
#iAMme Survey Update
Superintendent Black indicated that the recent re-engagement of parents of K-6 students for the Identity Based Data Collection #iAMme survey resulted in stronger data from approximately 1500 parents.
