Bringing ESL (English as a Second Language) to life
The Centre for Employment & Learning’s Anytime ESL staff worked in partnership with Adam Sipione from the AMDSB communications department, newcomers from our English as a Second Language classes, Perth Auto Dismantlers, Perth County EMS, Perth East Fire Department and the OPP to film some video for an online ESL course “Interacting with Police”. A road was closed in Perth East to allow for safely filming some common scenarios involving an accident and what to expect if a driver is pulled over. CEL thanks everyone who helped with this event. It will add an element of reality to our online courses that few other programs have.
Jump Rope for Heart
This spring, seventeen schools across the district raised more than $80,000 for Jump Rope for Heart. In this article in the Stratford Beacon Herald, a few schools, in particular, are mentioned for their record-breaking contributions.
Kudos to the AMDSB Payroll Department
The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan has issued its annual employee stewardship report. The purpose of the report is to provide transparency to school boards on the quality and timeliness of the data that is shared from the board on behalf of our employees or retired employees to the pension board. This year, among the 16 school boards in the province that are similar in size, between 1,000 and 2,000 employees, AMDSB ranked first in providing the information. And among all 72 boards in the province, AMDSB ranked second. Superintendent Paul Langis offered congratulations to the payroll department.
Police praise for GDCI principal and secretary
Secretary Elaine Fielder and Principal Kendra Brohman will be receiving an OPP Commissioner’s Citation for the help they provided in locating a possible missing student. The incident occurred last February in Goderich. Brohman and Fielder sprang into action using their communication skills, the school’s technology and assisting another school and the OPP to assist with the search. They will be recognized at a special public ceremony at a later date. (date not yet available)

Tenders Over the Summer
If needed, it has been customary for the board to authorize the Director or designate to proceed in the most efficient way possible with tendered projects during the summer period. This year, it is anticipated that tenders may be required for Facilities projects for an Early Years Addition at Exeter Elementary School.
It was recommended and approved that the Avon Maitland District School Board proceed with all summer projects as expeditiously as possible; and that, the Avon Maitland District School Board grant approval to the successful tender in any project commenced during the summer break period on the understanding that:
- each tender is recommended by the appropriate professional;
- each tender is recommended by the Director of Education or designate; and
- all necessary information is communicated to the Board at its next regular meeting.
School may be out for most people but the Avon Maitland District School Board offers a popular summer learning program for both staff and students. For staff, 31 different summer classes are being offered on a variety of topics. The offerings are based on what staff indicated they were interested in learning.
For students, 200 grades 1/2 students have registered for programs, 60 7/8 students have registered and close to 300 credits are being offered for secondary students with many of those co-op credits.
