Mental Health Week
The Avon Maitland District School Board is recognizing Mental Health Week May 7 – May 11. Many staff members are wearing green ribbons in recognition of the week. Receptionist Dianne Peck proudly wears one as she greets people at the Education Centre in Seaforth.
Pathways Night in Stratford Big Success
Hundreds of people showed up for the first Pathways Night in Stratford last Wednesday. Students and families were shown the many different options available to them in AMDSB secondary schools, post-secondary schools, apprenticeship programs and workplace opportunities. There were many hands-on stations so people could actually try some of the trades.
Student Trustee Update
New trustee named
Student trustee Natalie Moore LDSS announced the name of the new student trustee who will be joining the Board. Kristin Vleeming of Stratford Central will replace Jesse Russell when he moves on.
Vote of support
Trustees voted unanimously to write a letter in support of the OSTA/AECO student trustee group report titled “A Turning Point for Education: The Student Platform. Education policy recommendations for the 2018 provincial election – created by students, for students.” The three key pillars of the report are student wellbeing, 21st-century learning, and equitable access to opportunities. Chair Randy Wagler will write a letter of support that the students can use as they push politicians and those running in the upcoming provincial election, for change and improvements.
May 7 – May 11 is Education Week. The theme this year is Equity in Action. AMDSB is highlighting several ways in which it supports this initiative including providing posters to schools supporting gender neutral language to showcasing our Riverside Rural Learning program.
The Board is also a sponsor of the dream BIG event, a night of Inclusion – Reaching Goals – Overcoming Obstacles. One of the key speakers is Sam Forbes, known as the Dancing Barista and featured on the Ellen Show two years ago. This year’s dream BIG event is Thursday, May 10th at the Libro Community Hall in Clinton.
Student Identity-Based Data Collection
The Avon Maitland District School Board is taking part in a provincial pilot project with several other school boards to gain census-type data that will help identify where systemic barriers exist and eliminate discriminatory biases in order to support equity and student achievement and well-being. Acquiring the data will help the Board make evidence-informed decisions for policies, training and targeted programs and supports. Director of Education, Dr. Lisa Walsh today announced the Ministry will provide $199,000 in funding to help support the project. More details to come at a later date.
More than one-hundred students are participating in DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) assessments this week. This is a great opportunity for AMDSB students. French is spoken worldwide and is the official language in almost 50 countries, including Canada. The DELF is recognized in more than 165 countries.
Grants for Student Needs (GSNs) 2018/2019
The Avon Maitland District School Board is optimistic that the 2018/2019 GSNs will result in a positive impact on our students. The GSNs include revenues to cover staff increases and enhancements to help cover inflationary cost increases. The investments in school facility capital are welcome for AMDSB as we strive to maintain our aging school buildings. We are pleased to note that many of the enhancements provided by the Ministry align with our local needs.
