Summer Learning has been funded by CODE (Council of Directors of Education) for the past six years.
Programs ran at various locations throughout the district during the month of July. Core elements of the AMDSB Summer Learning were literacy programming for Grade 1 students and numeracy programming for Grade 2students each morning, followed by a partnership with a community recreation program each afternoon. Summer Learning aims to minimize summer learning loss while also contributing to increased levels of student achievement and confidence.
According to Frank Kelly, Executive Director, CODE:
Since the inception of the SLP – now in its sixth year — it has become increasingly apparent that the program benefits more than just the students: many parents have reported becoming more engaged in their child’s learning through SLP outreach initiatives to the students’ homes. And teachers have said summer learning provides unique opportunities for their professional development.
Feedback each year from AMDSB Summer Learning students, families and teachers conveys a feeling of pride in the growth in skills and confidence for students. The experience sets a positive trajectory for all involved.
