We would like to announce an exciting update regarding the VISION Phase of the Stratford Public Schools Renovation Project.
The VISION Phase is the long-term outcome of the research and input gathering processes for what will happen in 2020-21, after Stratford Central Secondary School is renovated during the 2019-20 school year.
New Preferred Option: Option 7, a ‘One School-Two Campus’ model
Through review, analysis and public consultation regarding Stratford Central Secondary School and with consideration of the input provided, another exciting option has emerged: to create a one school / two campus model with Stratford Central being a grades 7-9 school and Northwestern being a grades 10-12 school. It became clear that any of the six original options would not be possible without significant consequences, such as increased concurrent programs, travelling back and forth between locations and loss of some program options at both schools.
To remain transparent, we want to make sure that we communicate that this new option is preferred — it meets the criteria and most closely matches the input gathered through thoughtexchange.
Option 7 provides an incredible opportunity to create innovative and enhanced programming for all of our Stratford students, grades 7-12, and not unlike other options, would see the migration of Stratford Central and Stratford Northwestern to a ‘One School – Two Campus’ model:
- Central Campus housing grades 7 to 9
- Northwestern Campus housing grades 10 to 12
This dual campus model ensures maximum program flexibility for our students now, and in the future. It provides equitable access to a wider variety of high-quality course options in all grades, driven by student choice, and finally, it allows for all students to develop a sense of belonging in each school over a period of time.
We are excited about the possibilities this option affords, and are beginning to explore those possibilities with our curriculum, student success and pathways teams.
We know that this has been stressful, but it is important that we get it right because the impacts these decisions have on students, parents and the community, are profound. We are working on the most appropriate process to evaluate all options and reach a final decision.
In September 2018, we identified 6 possible options for the future of the Stratford secondary schools, starting after the Transition Year of September 2019-2020. We also identified criteria which must be considered when analyzing those options. Over the fall of 2018, senior staff reviewed the options against the criteria for consideration, while keeping in mind the principles we had agreed upon for this project.
All of the details of the options, criteria, and principles can be seen on the main page of the Stratford Public Schools section of our website.
